Wuthering
Heights as a fiction of love based on mysticism: - Wuthering Heights, the only novel written by
Emile Bronte is one of the greatest love fictions not merely of English
literature but of European literature as well. Its uniqueness lies as a mystic
love novel. Her philosophy of love which is coloured by mysticism, clearly
reflected in this novel. It is mysticism in her treatment of love that keeps
her apart from the contemporary writers of her time. Unlike the contemporary
writers, her treatment of love with which she dealt exclusively is based on the
romantic conception of love which is something deeper, extremely intense
emotions.
The deep and
spiritual love between Heathcliff and
Catherine:- ((The love
of Heathcliff and catherine which is the dominating theme in the novel exists
on a higher or spiritual plane. Both Heathcliff and catherine are soul mates
for each other who have an affinity which draws them together irresistibly.
Cathy’s love for Healthcliff: - Catherine Confides in Nelly the deep love she
feels for Heathcliff, is not a result of mutual respect or sexual attraction,
but because they are the children of same spiritual principle of storm. So in a
sublime passage, she expresses her love for Heathcliff in a unique Way: ‘’ I
love him not because he’s handsome, Nelly, but because he’s more myself than I
am…………’’
Referring to
their souls, she again says,
‘’ Whatever
our souls are made of his and mine are the same’’............................................................
