the novel. Do you think this was Dickens’s choice, to make David simply a
background on which to display the more interesting characters? Why or why not?
As you might gather from the title, David
Copperfield is the hero of our novel. But he's not only our hero and central
character. He's also our narrator. David is looking back on the events of his
own life. This is true even in episodes when David doesn't play a very large
role in the action – when Mr. Peggotty recounts little Emily's suffering, when
Mr. Micawber faces down Uriah Heep, or when Mr. Dick brings Doctor and Mrs.
Strong back together, for example. Throughout the novel, David's commentary
totally influences everything we think and feel about the events
unfolding.
A posthumous child, extremely sensitive in retrospect, David first
experiences cruelty and tyranny when his young widowed mother marries stern Mr.
Murdstone, and he quickly forms emotional alliances with the underprivileged
and the victimized. His loyalties are sometimes misplaced, as in the case of
Steerforth, his school friend who seduces Little Em’ly, but his heart remains
sound and generous toward even the erring. As he passes from childhood to
disillusioned adolescence, his perceptions increase, though he often misses the
truth because he misreads the evidence before him. His trust is all the more
remarkable when one considers the recurrence of error that leads him from false
friends to false love and on to near catastrophe. Finally, unlike his creator,
David finds balance and completion in his literary career, his abiding
friendships, and his happy second marriage..............................................................
